- Geographical location:
The Red River delta
(RRD) is located in the south of the Tropic of Cancer, between latitudes 22 °
00 'and 21 ° 30' N and longitude 105 ° 30 'and 107 ° 00' E.
The natural area is
23,336 km2, accounting for 7.1% of the country's land area and 22.7% of the
country's population. The population density is 961 people per 1 square Km, the
highest in the country and possibly one of the densely populated rural places
in the world.
The Red River Delta
alone has ten provinces and cities : Bac Ninh, Ha Nam, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Nam
Dinh, Ninh Binh, Thai Binh, Vinh Phuc, Hai Phong, Hanoi.
In the North and
northwest near the midlands and mountains, it is rich in mineral and forest
resources. It borders the Tonkin Gulf to the East, with abundant marine
resources, rich oil and gas potential. It is adjacent to North Central to the
south that is famous for building materials and precious metals.
As a whole, the Red
River Delta is the flat low-lying plain formed by the Red River and its
distributaries merging with the Thái Binh River in northern Vietnam. The delta
has the smallest area but highest population and population density of all
regions. Most of the land is devoted to rice cultivation.
- Transportation advantage:
The Red River Delta plays role as the northern gateway of the
country. Existing traffic systems include road, river, sea, airway, railway,
Hai Phong seaport, Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi). They are linking hub
between the Red River delta and other economic regions in the country. It is
also the expanded exchange area with other countries in the region and in the
world. The territory of the Red River Delta is "adjacent" to China
(the big market of the whole world) and "close" to the countries in
NorthEast Asia.
- Advantages of natural resources:
Firstly, there are ecologically diverse areas, including
plain, midland and mountainous areas; fertile fields with the Red River Delta.
Such diversely ecological zones are the basic conditions for the development of
comprehensive agro-forestry-fishery production. Thanks to that, the Red River
Delta is called the granary; Every year, the total output of cereals,
foodstuffs and other agricultural products ranks second (after the Mekong
delta), contributed significantly to ensuring food security and agricultural
commodity exports. There are a number of mineral resources that have large
reserve such as 98% coal, 40% kaolin, 25% limestone in comparison with the
country one.
- Human strength:
The
region has large human resources, high intellectual standards, and people have
traditions of hard work and creativity. The region has more than 26% of
officers graduating from college and university and 72% after university and
23.6% of technical workers in the country. There are nearly 100 colleges,
universities, 70 professional secondary schools, 60 technical workers schools
and 40 vocational schools, hundreds of specialized research institutes,
including many leading institutes, more than 20 leading hospitals, are one of
the three specialized health centers in the country
In fact, the Red
River Delta leads the regions in terms of quantity and quality of human
resources and its ability to research and develop science and technology,
education, training and health care.
- Strengths in tourism:
The Red River Delta has great potential to develop the tourism
economics. The eastern borders the Gulf of Tonkin, the total length of the
coast is 620 km, has special marine tourism resources with many beautiful
beaches, famous landscape. There is Huong Tich cave, Ao Vua, Suoi Hai, Tam Coc,
Bich Dong, Con Son, Pho Hien, etc,. More than 1,700 historical relics - made up
70% of the national ones. These are the bases for developing a diversified
tourist economy, attracting more and more domestic and foreign tourists to
visit.
- Topography: The
central area of the Red River Delta is very flat, lying at a height of 0.4 m to
12 m above sea level, with 56% less than 2 m.
Advantages and predominance
- Location strength:
the Red River Delta has great potential and many predominant advantages over
other economic regions are very convenient for the socio-economic development.
The Red River Delta has the advantage when Hanoi is a political, socio-economic
and cultural center and national defense and security. The Red River Delta also
has the northern key economic zone with six provinces and centrally-run
cities, including Hanoi, Hai Phong, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Vinh Phuc and
Bac Ninh. This is also the dynamic economic region of the country.
- Growth rate:
Increasing income per capita to US$ 2,500 in 2015 and US$ 4,180 by 2020 (equal
to 1.3 times the national average). To strive for the target by 2020, the
agricultural propotion in the region's GDP will reach 7-7.5%; industry,
construction from 45 - 47%; services from 46 - 48%.
- Economic structure:
Continue to shift in a positive direction. The proportion of agriculture,
forestry and fishery decreased, while the proportion of industry and services
increased rapidly.
