Regional advantages

- Strengths in mining and processing of minerals and hydroelectricity:
Northern Midlands and Mountains is the region with the largest mineral and hydroelectricity reserves in the country. The land here is rich in coal, iron ore, manganese, copper, lead, zinc, rare earth, apatite ... Coal-mines are concentrated mainly in the northeast (Quang Ninh, Thai Nguyen). The Northeast also has more metal mines, notably Yen Bai, tin and bauxite (Cao Bang), zinc - lead in Cho Dien (Bac Kan), copper - gold (Lao Cai). Non-metallic minerals have apatite (Lao Cai). Each year this economic zone exploits about 600 thousand tons of ore to produce phosphate.

The hydroelectricity reserve of the Red River system (11 million kW) accounts for more than one-third of the country's hydroelectricity one. Da river alone make up nearly 6 million kW. This large hydropower is being exploited. Thac Ba Hydropower Plant on Chay River has designed capacity of 110,000 kW. The Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant on Da River has a designed capacity of 1.9 million kW.

- Strengths of industrial crops, medicinal plants, subtropical and temperate vegetables:
Northern Midlands and Mountains are dominated by feralit on schist, limestone and other parent rocks. In addition, there are also alluvial soils in the midland. It has a humid tropical climate, monsoonal with cold winters, and is strongly influenced by mountainous terrain conditions. As a result, the Northern Midlands and Mountains have big advantages for the development of subtropical and temperate industrial crops. This is the largest tea area in the country, with the famous tea types in Phu Tho, Thai Nguyen, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Son La.

In mountainous areas near the border of Cao Bang, Lang Son, as well as in Hoang Lien Son mountainous range, climate conditions are favorable for the cultivation of precious medicinal plants (tamarind, cardamom, ... and fruit trees such as plum, peach, pear. Sa Pa can grow winter vegetables and produce seeds all year round
